Ok, perhaps the "best place to work in the world" is a bit of hyperbole, but still, it's pretty awesome here!!

The best place to work in the world? And it's in SA! (link to article)

It's a $1 billion San Antonio-based company with a headquarters nicknamed "The Castle." And it sure looks like they play as much as they work. Our Randy Beamer humiliated himself to show you what it's...

What a concept: having a judge who understands the issues being argued!

Here's an unexpected turn... Oracle must be slamming their heads to their desks pretty hard for inspiration, right now...

I've always said that the biggest problem with TDD is that it can blind you into believing that you've covered all of the possible ways a program can be used, and when the tests pass, your code is perfect.

Don't get me wrong: I think good tests are essential to code integrity. But integration tests are much closer to the real-world usage of your code, and that's where the lion's share of attention should be. But since unit tests are much quicker to both write and run, that's where most of the testing focus goes.

Unit Tests Don't Find Bugs: the Death of QA (link to article)

Unit tests don't find bugs. They find regressions. This is a painful lesson I learned when I first started doing TDD (test-driven development), and it's well known among most TDD circles. TDD&...

I guess I don't understand the controversy. I think everyone who drives a car should understand how an engine works, how the drive train transfers power, etc. That doesn't mean that I'm going to be rebuilding any transmissions anytime soon, but when my car isn't working, at least I understand why one type of repair costs $50 and another costs $1500.

The same goes for programming. Everyone's lives are dependent on computers/technology these days, and it doesn't help if you're ignorant about all that stuff. Learn how programs work. Learn how internet requests work. Learn how authentication works. At the very least, anyone with this basic knowledge won't be as likely to fall for some malware tricks, and maybe they'll even learn to appreciate how difficult a job it is to write code that works.

Zed Shaw chimes in on the Please Don't Learn to Code controversy in his typical, inimical style:

I'm going to give you a piece of advice when you're trying to learn something new: Never listen to people who try to make beginners feel like losers. For whatever reason, some people get off on making beginners feel like they're worthless for attempting something. Maybe it's because they feel threatened by new entrants, or maybe they were picked on as kids and this makes them feel powerful. Who knows, but generally if they're trying to make you feel like a loser because right now you're not that good at something, then just ignore them. They suck.
